First of all, I would like to introduce myself to everyone here on this site. My name is Joe Martinez, and I'm a 34 year old Hispanic male, college student, father of two young boys, and liberal democrat. I have never written a diary before, so I would appreciate a small bit of leeway in this being my first effort. I guess you could say that I have had a tough time living in a state, which many consider to be the farthest to the right, and producing the worst president in the history of our nation. For the most part of my adult life, I have quietly made my way through my life, not really caring about politics or the problems we face as a nation.
However, when I returned to college, I found myself really begin to take issue with the problems we face as a nation. The clincher was once I began my own family, then I truly understood the importance that politics has over not only my life, but the future of my young sons.
This great awakening also is due in large part to Senator Barack Obama. His speeches literally brought tears to my eyes as I realized that the HOPE I seek for my sons and this country, could actually be achieved.
I have never donated money to any candidate on any level. I have never actively campaigned for any politician. I have never made phone calls to complete strangers on behalf of any political figure. I have never organized and recruited others on behalf of any candidate.
However, I have done all of this, on behalf of Barack Obama, and I will continue to do so until he is elected President of this great nation of ours. I am willing to do all of this because I truly believe that in order to achieve the HOPE we seek for a better future, we can no longer sit idly by as politicians continue to put partisanship and party above the real needs of Americans. WE can no longer be subjected to dirty politics. WE cannot believe that putting the same politicians back in the WH will garner different results.
Although far from a scientific survey, I can say with great certainty, that I encounter many more fellow Obama supporters than all other candidates combined. Whenever I initiate a conversation at the grocery store, on the bus, or at the movie theatre, I am always pleased to meet Obama supporters from all types of demographics. From my atheist, progressive, older co-worker to the dental hygienist who helps take care of my kid’s teeth, I find these people all believe in one thing. That Barack Obama can bring the change we hunger for, and in doing so will also unite us as a Nation.
I truly believe that a person of his character, eloquence, intelligence, and charisma only comes along once in a lifetime. I do not remember JFK, but older friends and family do, and they believe he will be my generations JFK, a person who will dramatically transform our political landscape.
One final word, and then I'll close this diary. Perhaps the most profound thing which has taken place in this year’s presidential race is the tremendous grassroots organization that Barack has built across the country. I feel a "part" of this campaign. I feel that the calls I make and the money I donate are really making a difference in his campaign. He has given me and others real ownership of his candidacy, and in doing so, has made this campaign really personal to me.
